How to use Precipitated Barium Sulphate in Paints and Coatings?
Precipitated barium sulfate is used in high-solid coatings, and the use of larger particle grades will affect the surface gloss. The grade of smaller particles is affected by the higher specific surface area, so it needs to use more base material, so high filling ratio and high solid content are almost impossible. Precipitated barium sulfate with a particle size in the range of 0.xn--7m-99b can resist flocculation and separation of pigments, thereby reducing the amount of pigments to an extremely low value. Because 0.xn--7m-99b precipitated barium sulfate actually has no effect on viscosity in a wide range, it can be formulated according to the highest ratio of precipitated barium sulfate in the given formula, and it has no effect on gloss. As a result, these precipitated barium sulfates provide a good opportunity for reducing VOC and reducing formulation costs due to the replacement of more expensive pigments. In addition to white or bright paint, it is worth mentioning that white powdery precipitated barium sulfate can also be used in pure black paint without affecting the black color. This is related to the refractive index of precipitated barium sulfate, which is similar to that of commonly used resins, so that the precipitated barium sulfate incorporated into the system is not white but transparent. Therefore, no light gray is produced in carbon black paint. Precipitating barium sulfate can also reduce the VOC of black paint.
Through deflocculation, the effective effect of carbon black can only be slightly increased, and the replacement of a large amount of carbon black with precipitated barium sulfate will reduce the total base material demand and viscosity, which in turn reduces VOC. Precipitated barium sulfate for powder coatings Powder coatings are one of the fastest growing markets in the coatings industry. Precipitated barium sulfate has special properties, low base material requirements and excellent dispersibility, making it an indispensable component of powder coatings. The specific gravity of precipitated barium sulfate is as high as titanium dioxide, which gives us the opportunity to formulate non-flying paint powder coating formulations, even when using fine powders. The mechanical properties of powder coatings filled with precipitated barium sulfate in a typical powder coating formulation are related to particle size (the finer the better). Precipitated barium sulfate is used in water-based coatings. Due to the chemical inertness and insolubility of precipitated barium sulfate, it is as suitable for water-based coatings as conventional coatings. The effect of micronized precipitated barium sulfate has been proven, even in electrophoretic coatings (electrophoretic coatings have very complicated requirements for particle deposition or wettability). Usually the replacement amount of titanium dioxide is in the range of 10-30%.
